Originally developed as a part-time "solo" outlet for Skullflower guitarist Matthew Bower, Total's prolific output has in some ways eclipsed the achievements of the now-defunct legendary band. Using a droning electric guitar and/or organ in a variety of tones ranging from excoriating to elegiac, Total's music envelops the listener in a haze of overtones variously evoking Indian music, machine noise, nature sounds, and monolithic power. John Godbert (egyptian double reed) and Neil Campbell (violin) occasionally embellish the sound with their unusual instruments. EBF represents a more "accessible," carefully-edited look at Total than some of their recent releases while not giving back one iota of hallucenogenic power.
